As i select pictures i have made throughout this project for

publication, i realise that what is happening is not on the margins

of the community, but central to it.

The message seems to be:

Get use to the emptiness. This is the future. Your future.

Truly - where have all the people gone?

the urban, industrial forms we all see, everyday, as city dwellers.

the familiar becoming unfamiliar.

currently, with this project, i'm trying to engage the viewers

emotional response to a world of what has been and what is to come.

disappearing environments, gap sites and wasteland.

sunny afternoon.

peaceful.

and really it shouldn't be.

something has gone missing here.

opportunity probably.

where have all the people gone?

places of industry, friendship...life.

gone.

people...gone.

this community lives.

survives.

exists.

like communities do.

today.

across the street the shops are still open.

they're not very busy.

not surprising really.

got to admire their spirit though.

all smiles gone.

eery silences heard amid the noise and disruption.

still; no-one will listen.

not know.

never again.

where have all the people gone?

totally immersed with the Stryd Fawr / Stryd Uchel Project [ 2016 ]

at present.

but i'm continually being struck, as i travel around, by the

emptiness of crowded places.

loneliness, in all it's forms.

how is this possible?

Footnote:

it seems i've created an argument / discussion in the studio, about

mixing up loneliness and emptiness.

the days just fly by.

where have all the people gone?

from the studio i can pretty much see most of the neighbourhood.

full of people.

full of things going on.

but the streets are often empty.

Dirty Smoke

by

steve coel

where have all the people gone?

urban walking, street talking...dialling into what exactly?

some kind of vibe and as with any vibe you get good ones and you

get bad ones.

too many loners stand by walls and on street corners.

so where have all the people gone when you’re still surrounded by

life?

there is both a natural and man-made silence. sounds that climax

and bounce around boundaries we place inside our communities.

machine and tool, cloth and flesh, shade and light.

suspicion etched into the shapes we make as we move around.

you see maybe 2 or 3 sleeping bags every day.

grey tracksuits, old trainers, cheap smart haircuts, green skin.

smell the pizza, dirty smoke, diesel.

it ain’t anger, it really isn’t.

it’s some kind of passive thing that’s going on here; roll

over, walk on by, eyes to the floor people.. eyes to the floor.

but you know deep down, deep down, people are burning up.

life’s too short.

are currently being shown at ingot studios, birmingham.

the selection process has started very early and looks like lasting

a long time.

not really a bad thing i suspect.
